How To Dance With Life

Fortunate, indeed, is the man who takes exactly the right measure of himself, and holds a just balance between what he can acquire and what he can use.~Peter Latham (1789-1875)

In the Chinese philosophy of Taoism, right action and right living create a life of harmony and delight.

When a balance occurs between opposing forces, then your life flourishes.

When action is followed by rest, when initiative is followed by reflection, and when willful intent is followed by utter surrender, then you are following a path of optimum power.

I think the most fascinating example of what balance in the cosmos can do is in the story of how the ancient wisdom of the East has merged with modern scientific reckoning.

Six thousand years ago, sages plotted the web and woof of the universe, using esoteric meditative techniques, and today, modern scientists, using unbelievable technologcal probes, have come to the same conclusions about the nature of the cosmos.

A rishi from ancient India and a modern quantum physicist from Harvard university would have a fascinating discussion about how the universe is glued together.

The new balance between East and West, Metaphysics and Science, right-brain thinking and left-brain thinking has revealed a marvelous design to the structure of reality.

Similarly, we as individuals, living in a time when the most amazing possibilities are available, would be wise to take stock of who we are and what we can become and then balance out our dreams with the opportunity for their realization.

Imagine, for a moment, how your life might improve if you were to attain a balance in all your affairs, enjoying optimum relationships, financial success, vibrant health, and an ongoing education about the world.

I believe that when your life is in balance, everything will take on a magical quality. Things will fall into place almost effortlessly. Your experience of being alive will be deeper, richer, and more fulfilling.

Balance is a personal, dynamic force that conserves energy, rejuvenates vision, and harmonizes the disparate aspects of a life.

A person in balance finds a way to maximize resources and minimize pockets of scarcity.

When we can identify what our lives stand for, then we will attain the harmony we need to organize our experiences to be deeply meaningful, uplifting, and gratifying.

"Never think that you're not good enough yourself. A man should never think that. People will take you very much at your own reckoning." ~ Anthony Trollope

What is self-improvement?

Self -improvement or personal development comprises the development of the self. To understand this further: a man can have different personalities (at home / at office / at parties, etc) but his personal self is one and cannot differ on each occasion. When someone is referring to personal development then he is meaning a full and total transformation from deep within and not just a temporary personality change for the occasion alone.

Eleven Keys to Success and Happiness

1. Mend a quarrel
Seek out a forgotten friend and tell them how much you enjoyed them once and that you wish them peace.

2. Dismiss Suspicion
Take a risk of getting hurt and replace that suspicion with Trust.

3. Write a Love Letter
I don't mean a mushy one. Write someone and tell them how much you appreciate them in your life and the joy they brought you at your last meeting. Do this daily.

4. Keep a promise
It's never to late to say I forgot. If you said you would do something, by all means follow through. You are the one that will feel better for it.

5. Forgive an enemy
Listen and apologize if you were wrong. Try to understand their point of view. Don't try to be right. Examine your demands on others.

6. Appreciate, be kind, be gentle, laugh a little. Does this need to be explained?

7. Express you gratitude Daily
Be thankful for what you do have and who you are. "I was having pity for having no shoes until I met a man with no feet".

8. Decry Complacency
Raise your standards. Mediocrity drains your energy. Excellence catapults your energy to another level.

9. Have faith
Trust and know that there is a greater force out there that supports you. There are no coincidences in life only learning's.

10. Gladden the heart of a child
Children are our future. Encourage them and make them feel special they are!

11. Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth
Take time to commune with nature. Standing in amazement of something so huge seems to put our worries in perspective.

Acts of Kindness Benefit Everyone

Do you really want to be happy? Everyone says yes, but the gateway to happiness makes some of us frown. The gateway to happiness, is giving to others. Think about this: "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." - The Dalai Lama

Some of us may feel that, if we give too much, our generosity, will be taken advantage of by others. This is true, and a few very selfish individuals can possibly perceive your good intentions as weakness.

However, people who seek to take advantage are in the minority. To quote Gandhi, "We must be the change, we wish to see in the world." Think about it, change has to start somewhere, so why not start with you and me, right now?

You can donate anything randomly, without seeking reward, and anonymously, without telling anyone. This is good for you, the universe, and those who receive your acts of kindness. Every time you give, you will receive ? even, if you are not looking for a reward.

Try it, and you will see, what some call, "karma," the law of cause and effect. It works like this: For every action there is a reaction. Let's make sure the reactions to our actions are good ones.

Danny Thomas said, "All of us are born for a reason, but all of us don't discover why. Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others."

Share everything and you will achieve a legacy of kindness. Share nothing and people will, do their best, to forget you. When my life is over I will only leave memories, in the minds of others, and I want them all to be good ones.

So, how much should you give? It can start with, "heart felt", kind words, a note, a card, or a flower. You will find that your gifts or donations won't make you poor. As a result of this, you will see most people, naturally, return kindness to you.

You should also take the time to be polite to all of the people who perform services for you, every day. Many people do not bother to say hello to the maid, janitor, parking attendant, or service clerk.

Once you do, you may even learn their name, and you would be surprised how many of them will go out of their way to give you good service, just by addressing them by their first name.

If you establish sincerity and trust where ever you go, you will be loved by your fellow man. It is really that simple. As Mohammed said, "A person's true wealth is the good he or she does in the world."

It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live. - Marcus Aurelius (121-80 AD, Roman Emperor, Philosopher)

Covey in Reverse

7 Habits Of Highly Ineffective People

For maximum effectiveness in life, love or business, it helps to have the right habits. You knew that, of course, but don’t forget that it also helps to not have the wrong habits. What are these?

Seven Effectiveness-Killing Habits

1. Short term thinking. I knew a man who paid $700 rent instead of $550 per month for a nicer place. The landlord didn’t require a deposit, so he could move in for $300 less. Now he pays $1,800 more per year in rent. Borrowing from a loan shark to get into the other place would have made more sense, even at 200% annual interest.

2. Waiting for opportunities. Don’t we all know people who are “waiting for their ship to come in,” while others are out there building ships? Work invites opportunities - waiting doesn’t.

3. Blaming. This is a favorite habit of many bitter people. When has blaming others ever motivated you to improve your situation? Talk about an effectiveness-killer.

4. Looking outside for answers to inside problems. Similar to blaming, this habit is based on misunderstanding why we are in our current situation. In our free and wealthy society, it’s usually due to what’s going on inside our heads.

5. Procrastinating. Actually, I like this habit. Just stop applying it to things you need to do, and apply it to picking up that cigarette, eating that cake, or getting into that argument.

6. Laziness. I don’t know what to say about this bad habit, except that I don’t know of anyone who has suffered greatly from forcing themselves to get up and do something. Try something easy first.

7. Acting on impulse. I met a guy at the bus stop this week who within five minutes mentioned that he had bought a $200 hat and that he was hoping they would approve his welfare application. Do you think he might have a problem with impulse control?

If “creating a new you” seems daunting, just start correcting your bad habits, one-by-one. This alone will increase your effectiveness in any pursuit, and your success in life.

Seven Steps to a Better Day

Are you tired of the same routine day after day? Do you feel as if today is only a speed bump in the road between yesterday and tomorrow? Well, you're not alone! Many people live day-to-day with little hope for anything getting better. Some are trapped in corporate jobs where they are little more than rats in a maze. Others have routines at home that leave them uninspired and unchallenged.

There is hope for a better day. Try these seven suggestions:

1. Exercise Nothing gets your brain in gear like exercise. If you will start the day with a moderate workout, you likely will be more productive throughout the day.

2. Solve a problem You might choose a crossword puzzle or a brain teaser of some sort, but exercising your brain actually will help you solve other problems you face.

3. Read Set aside a portion of your day to read something inspirational or entertaining. Some people read comic strips while other people have daily devotional activities. Whatever you do, read something!

4. Laugh Life is too short to take it all so seriously. Enjoy life by finding humor in your daily activities.

5. Make a difference in someone else's life Make it your point to make other people smile. From the server at the restaurant to the bank teller, people always are trying to make your life easier. Tell them you appreciate their effort and go out of your way to show them you care.

6. Admit your incompetence You don't know how to do everything, so don't be afraid to say, "I don't know." When you admit the limits of your knowledge or expertise you have the opportunity to validate someone else in his or her knowledge or expertise.

7. Learn something new Before the day ends, make it a point to stretch the limits of your knowledge by discovering something you don't already know. Maybe you just need to look at a map and see where that city or country is located. Maybe you need to look up a word you find in a newspaper or magazine article. Whatever it is, there is something to learn today.

Of course, the first step to having a better day is your choosing to have a better day. Otherwise, you are destined to have todays and tomorrows that look a lot like your yesterdays!
